Since becoming a company, SMC’s focus has been on strengthening its organizational structure and institutional capabilities to increase its overall cost recovery and reduce reliance on donor support. Through a strategy of diversification and cross subsidization, company revenues from self-financed commodities have now increased to recover more than 100% of its all non-program related cost. SMC, through its own funds, currently secures 12 contraceptive brands, an ORS, a zinc tablet, a micronutrient powder for children and a sanitary napkin. As part of its organizational philosophy, SMC has also expanded its partnership with local pharmaceutical companies for supplies of oral contraceptive pills, ORS, Zinc, sprinkles and sanitary napkins. The company is well-placed to gradually increase its support to expand program activities through internal resources. SMC is thus considered as one of the most successful social business models globally.
