Brief Profile of the Partners of SMC in Implementing of Marketing Innovation for Health (MIH) Program

SMC, with funding from USAID and through a consortium of partner NGOs has been implementing a major program called Marketing Innovation for Health which is designed to improve access to and demand for quality of services in family planning, health and nutrition through the private sector. The partners in this program include Population Services International (PSI), BRAC, Concerned Women for Family Development (CWFD), Population Services and Training Center (PSTC), Shimantik and EngenderHealth (EH). A brief profile of the partners and their roles in MIH are as follows:

Technical Partners: Population Services International (PSI)

PSI is a global social marketing organization that harnesses the vitality of the private sector to address the health problems of low-income and vulnerable populations in more than 65 developing countries. Through its interventions, in 2011 alone, PSI averted an estimated 177,700 HIV infections, more than 23,000 maternal deaths, more than 4.3 million unintended pregnancies, over 470,000 malaria deaths, over 3.9 million diarrhea cases, and nearly 11,000 diarrhea deaths. Its reproductive health programs in over 30 countries offer services through 23 franchises in Asia, Africa, and Latin America with a combined estimated total of 16,036 franchisees delivering services to some 6.4 million clients in 2011. PSI provides technical assistance to the MIH staff on various program areas including research, child health program, long-term FP program and health providers’ training program. PSI also helps to build capacity to absorb global best practices in social marketing, and to gain international exposure.

Training Partner: EngenderHealth

EngenderHealth is a leading global women’s health organization committed to ensuring that every pregnancy is planned, every child is wanted, and every mother has the best chance at survival. In 20 countries around the world, EH train health care professionals and partner with governments and communities to make high-quality family planning and sexual and reproductive health services available - today and for generations to come. EngenderHealth has worked in Bangladesh since 1974, making substantial contributions to improvements in service quality and capabilities of FP services, including the expanded use of clinical methods, particularly sterilization. Under MIH, Engender Health is providing competency and skill-based training on Long Acting Contraceptive Method for 700 graduate providers; establishing Quality Assurance system and building referral linkages for permanent methods in MIH.

Community Mobilization Partner: BRAC

BRAC is a developmental organization focusing on poverty alleviation and empowering of the poor, especially women and children. Today, BRAC's multifaceted development interventions extend to 69,000 out of 86,000 villages and over 6,000 urban slums in all the 64 districts of Bangladesh. BRAC has a long history of providing health services to the poor and vulnerable. The strengths of BRAC in learning and doing put them in a better position to actively engage in offering services and strengthening health system in partnership. BRAC’s particular strengths are in its community based delivery and integration of services and facilitating the process of social mobilization within communities. In MIH, BRAC is implementing community mobilization activities through group meetings, advocacy meetings, workplace programs, school programs, and other channels reaching various target audiences which include MWRA, caregiver of the children under 5, husbands, adolescents, TBAs, and influencers. In order to increase product accessibility BRAC is also distributing public health and family planning products at the community level through community volunteers. BRAC is covering seven districts (Bandarban, Brahmanbaria, Chandpur, Comilla, Feni, Laxmipur and Noakhali) of Chittagong division to implement MIH program.

Community Mobilization Partner: Concerned Women for Family Development (CWFD)

CWFD emerged from an emotional response to help women in need of reproductive health care counseling. The Organization, originally named as `Concerned Women for Family Planning (CWFP)’, was registered in 1976, which began to work with only five female staff to cover an area of Dhaka City Corporation around 50,000 populations. Initially, CWFD had a single focus program on family planning would not sustain a significant change in women’s development in Bangladesh. Accordingly, the Organization initiated new program for women, men, children and adolescents encompassing primary health care, life-skill development, economic opportunity and women’s empowerment against social injustice. In MIH, CWFD is implementing community mobilization activities through group meetings, advocacy meetings, workplace programs, school programs, and other channels reaching various target audiences which include MWRA, caregiver of the children under 5, husbands, adolescents, TBAs, and influencers. In order to increase product accessibility CWFD is also distributing public health and family planning products at the community level through community volunteers. CWFD is covering four districts namely Barisal, Pirojpur, Jhalokathi of Barisal division and Faridpur of Dhaka division to implement MIH program.

Community Mobilization Partner: Population Services & Training Center (PSTC)

PSTC is a non-government and not-for-profit organization and it works for the improvement of life status of poor and social disadvantaged people by undertaking various programs and projects. PSTC began its operations in 1978. Its mission is to improve the health, social security and physical living condition of the poor and socially disadvantaged. PSTC the then FPSTC has promoted and developed 82 NGOs throughout the country, who have been playing a significant role to supplement and complement national health and population program during last 33 years. In MIH, PSTC is implementing community mobilization activities through group meetings, advocacy meetings, workplace programs, school programs, and other channels reaching various target audiences which include MWRA, caregiver of the children under 5, husbands, adolescents, TBAs, and influencers. In order to increase product accessibility PSTC is also distributing public health and family planning products at the community level through community volunteers. PSTC is covering four districts namely Kishoregonj, Narshingdi, Munshigonj and Madaripur of Dhaka division to implement to implement MIH program.

Community Mobilization Partner: SHIMANTIK

Shimantik, is a national non-government organization in Bangladesh, started its activities back in 1979, it has expanded its activities to cover wide ranging programmatic areas like primary health care, reproductive health including family planning, new-born care, nutrition, environment, women’s development, formal and non-formal education, income generation and disaster relief. Shimantik has implemented several large health related projects in Sylhet Division. It has a very strong social mobilization background since its inception as a community organization from 1979. Its community based new-born care project and community mobilization for safe motherhood, new bIts community based new-born care project and community mobilization for safe motherhood; new-born care and family planning project in Sylhet division have a very strong social mobilization component. In MIH, Shimantik is implementing community mobilization activities through group meetings, advocacy meetings, workplace programs, school programs, and other channels. In order to increase product accessibility Shimantik is also distributing public health and family planning products at the community level through community volunteers. Shimantik is covering four districts namely Sylhet, Sunamgonj, Moulvibazar and Hobigonj of Sylhet division to implement MIH program.
