MoniMix: Micronutrient Powder

Background:

MoniMix is a home fortification strategy to improve nutritional status of children from 6 months up to 5 years. In 2008, SMC introduced MoniMix containing a blend of micronutrients (iron including vitamin A, vitamin C, Folic Acid and Zinc) in powder form to address iron deficiency anemia in Bangladesh.

Indication:

MoniMix is most suited for all children from the age of 6 months to 24 months. It is also suitable for children under the age of 5. A single sachet of MoniMix provides the daily dose of 12.5 mg iron as recommended by World Health Organization (WHO) for children of 6-24 months.

Benefits of MoniMix:

  • Prevents and treats  micronutrient deficiencies and improves overall nutrition status of children (6-24 months)
  • Increases brain development and physical growth
  • Increases attention to and improves concentration in different activities such as education, games & sports, etc.
  • Enhances learning ability and memory functions
  • Increases resistance to diseases and reduces infections
  • Increases appetite

Dosage:

MoniMix is given to the children by mixing it with semi-solid food at normal temperature. One packet of MoniMix should be given daily for two months. Mothers should not give more than one packet MoniMix to their children daily. Furthermore, there must be a four-month interval between courses. After the interval, MoniMix should be given daily for two months following same process to be continued up to 5 years of age.

Caution:

Do not give more than one sachet of MoniMix to a child per day. Iron-containing supplements should be withheld from severely malnourished children during treatment of electrolyte imbalance (usually during the first seven days of treatment), according to WHO guidelines.

Side effects:

Color of stool may become dark. It happens because of unabsorbed iron being excreted in the stool, which is normal for any iron supplements.
